Brief Description

As an Apprentice Metal Fabricator, you will be responsible for carrying out metal fabrication work using various materials such as rolled steel joists, columns, channels, steel plate, and metal sheets, among others.

Qualifications Required

A minimum of 5 GCSEs, including Maths and English at grade 4 or a relevant grade 2 functional skills qualification. Apprentices lacking these qualifications must gain them before taking the end point assessment.

Training to be Provided

This apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of Work Based Assessment and day/block release.  The programme will culminate in an End Point Assessment, where all the skills and knowledge gained on the apprenticeship will be formally tested.

You can move into specialised areas like welding or design, or even take on supervisory or managerial roles. After the completion of your apprenticeship, Outwoods Engineering may also offer potential permanent positions based on your performance during the apprenticeship. Key Responsibilities:

• Work safely at all times, complying with health and safety legislation, regulations, organisational, and environmental requirements.
• Plan and prepare for metal fabrication activities before commencing work.
• Check materials to ensure they conform to specified grades, dimensions, and thicknesses as identified on detailed engineering drawings.
• Use correct methods for the moving and handling of resources and materials.
• Set up, check, and adjust equipment for safe and reliable fabrication of metal products or components, maintaining equipment in a reliable and safe condition.
• Interpret technical drawings, patterns, templates, and specifications to mark out, produce, and assemble complex fabricated products to meet required specifications and quality standards.
• Use appropriate tools, equipment, and techniques to shape and form (HOT or COLD) metal materials, demonstrating knowledge of material properties and characteristics.
• Monitor resources and activities throughout the fabrication of products or components, identifying areas for improving the production process.
• Perform cutting, drilling, shaping, and preparing of metal materials during fabrication activities using manual and power tools, thermal and laser cutting, calculating dimensions and tolerances using mathematics and instruments/equipment.
• Operate appropriate tools and equipment to join metal parts using a range of mechanical fasteners and fixing techniques required by specifications and quality requirements.
• Operate thermal joining equipment to join metal parts using a range of appropriate techniques to the standards required by specifications.
• Inspect and test joins for security against required standards.
• Carry out quality checks on component parts and completed assemblies.
• Deal with problems that occur within the fabrication activity in line with responsibilities of the role.
• Restore the work area and equipment to a safe and reliable condition upon completion of the activity.
• Complete documentation at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
